Is Climate Change real or is Science just not a thing? – Peter Mathieson

If one denies the reality, speed and severity of Anthropogenic Climate Change then one also has to deny most of what we know about physics and chemistry.
* Global temperature has risen 1.19ºC from the 1951-1980 average.
* Atmospheric CO² went from 280ppm in 1880 to 429ppm today. (An increase of greater than 50% over 146 years.) CO² hasn’t been this high for 14 million years. (For perspective – humans and chimps diverged 6-8 million years ago)
* All of that extra CO² has the isotopic signature of fossil carbon that has been sequestered for thousands or millions of years. Less than 1% of it can be explained away with volcanoes. Conclusion – IT’S DEFINITELY US!
* The main driver of recent Climate Change is definitely human generated CO².
Special mention – Methane (GH effect 27-30 times more potent than CO² over 100 years.)
How fast is the current rise in global average temperature?
The last 50 years has been more than 10 times faster than the fastest sustained rise in the 300,000 years modern humans have walked the Earth. It is MUCH more drastic than the last 10,000, relatively stable, years that spawned agriculture and human civilisation. Global temperature hasn’t been this high for 125,000 years.
Positive feedback loops like thawing permafrost, melting sea ice and methane clathrates could accelerate Climate Change at tipping points that are almost impossible to predict. Negative feedback loops like ‘global greening’ won’t be enough to negate them.
Is Australia contributing more per capita to Climate Change than other nations. HELL YES!
Skeptics Café will be held in the Function Room at The Stolberg Hotel, 197 Plenty Road Preston. The 86 tram route is close, and Bell train station – situated on the Epping line – is a short walk away. It will also be a virtual event accessible via Zoom, as per the details above.
Start Time: 6:00pm for dinner and a chat. 7:30pm for beginning of the talk.
