Understanding V-Risk: Navigating the Complex Landscape of Value in AI

Futurologist Adam Ford will present an understanding of V-risk – the danger of value misalignment – and examine why controlling AI’s capabilities isn’t enough. He’ll look at how premature goal lock-in, shallow understandings of value, and human misuse of powerful AI could lead to nasty outcomes that are so-called ‘safe’ in theory but catastrophic in implementation.

Did you know there are 3 phases of AI value understanding, each with differing levels of sophistication and varying potential for outcomes that place human welfare at risk? Neither did I, and that’s just one aspect of understanding V-risk.

Adam Ford MS.IT RMIT, futurologist, IEET Affiliate Scholar – works as a data architect/engineer/analyst and programmer. He is a grass roots journalist, has interviewed a huge amount of experts on the future – and is currently working on a documentary project focussing on preparing for the future of artificial intelligence – the Singularity.
