One of the interesting developments in Victoria and World Wide in recent years has been the growth of local “Skeptics In the Pub” groups.
In the past, we’ve often had the odd lone enquiry along the lines of “I live too far away from the City to attend your events. Is there a Skeptics group near me?”
The short answer was mostly “No”. However, we often chased up the enquiry, in an attempt to get some interest going. On most occasions, this lead nowhere. Then we were shown how to do it, by enterprising people in Country Victoria, the beachside suburbs and the Mornington Peninsula.
If you would like to belong to a group of Skeptics or free-thinkers where none exists, your best bet is to manufacture one. You pick a day and a date, book a pub (or a café), place an ad in the local paper, and tell all your friends about it. To paraphrase the Costner movie Field of Dreams:
“If you book it, they will come.”
Existing Victorian Skeptics in the Pubs and similar organisations include Sale SITP, Mordialloc SITP, The Celestial Teapot (Peninsula) and Borderline Skeptics(Albury Wodonga)

There is currently interest in a SITP in the hills east of Melbourne (Boronia, Ferntree Gully, Olinda, Sassafras, etc), as well as one in Greater Geelong. If you want to know more about those two groups, let us know at vic@skeptics.com.au.

just to let you know, Sale skeptics in the pub is going from strength to strength. At the beginning of this year I placed an ad in the local paper in the hope that somewhere out here in the bush others would be interested in developing a skeptical group. I was amazed and thrilled by the response.People travel hours to our presentations and lively intellectual discussions. Thanks to Vic Skeptics for your support. We have allot of fun and are planning to do more outreach in the new year. I encourage anyone thinking of starting a group to give it a go. It wont be what you expect but from my experience it will be even better.
