Movie Night: James Randi in Australia – 45th Anniversary Edition

Come along for dinner and conversation from 6.00 PM onwards. At 7.30 we will have a linked introduction to the documentary, James Randi in Australia, including input about the technique behind its digital reconstruction.

Filmed in 1980 the film covers the journey of James Randi to Australia to oversee scientific testing of water diviners (dowsers), who were offered the added incentive of $40,000 from four different “donors”. Randi was brought over by Dick Smith who commissioned the original project which was screened on Australian TV.

Test terms were agreed upon by both diviners and skeptics and strident efforts went into ensuring a double blind test took place. The diviners are 100% convinced they have this skill. What does testing reveal? Does testing alter the beliefs of water diviners?
We look forward to seeing you there.

Skeptics Café will be held in the Function Room at The Stolberg Hotel, 197 Plenty Road Preston. The 86 tram route is close, and Bell train station  – situated on the Epping line – is a short walk away. It will also be a virtual event accessible via Zoom, as per the details above.

Start Time: 6:00pm for dinner and a chat. 7:30pm for beginning of the film.

We aim to wrap up after 9:00pm.
